Son Beats Father To Death, Stabs Himself In Failed Maryland Murder-Suicide Attempt: Police

A Maryland man is behind bars after allegedly beating his father to death before turning the knife on himself in an unsuccessful suicide attempt, officials said.

Christopher Wiley Cooper, 22, is facing murder charges in connection with the killing of his father, 59-year-old Patrick Cooper, inside their Fort Washington home, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Officers responded to a reported attempted suicide at the 8000 block of Den Meade Avenue around 5 a.m. on Friday, March 14, where they found Patrick Cooper suffering from traumatic injuries. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Nearby, officers found Christopher Cooper, bleeding from multiple self-inflicted stab wounds to his abdomen. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators say Christopher Cooper fatally attacked his father before attempting to take his own life. An autopsy later determined that Patrick Cooper died from blunt force trauma, authorities said.

Christopher Cooper has been charged with:

  • First-degree murder;
  • Second-degree murder;
  • Other related charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
